Activating prior knowledge

  • Activating students' working memory, raising motivation levels and developing a clear understanding of the subject

Prior knowledge plays an important role in learning. Students can connect new information to what they already know. By sharing knowledge amongst themselves, students think about the correlation with what they are about to learn. The teacher guides this interaction process by asking questions at various levels of detail, and providing feedback.
Characteristics of activating prior knowledge:

  • Short and sweet (5 -10 min)
  • Starting point for the new material is clear
  • Inspiring for students, they just want to get started
  • It is clear why they need to learn something (goal)
  • It is clear what they can do with that knowledge (goal and function)
  • Knowledge sharing (interaction)
  • Learning objectives must be clear
